Poortjies, Plettenberg Bay

Poortjies is one of Plettenberg Bay’s oldest and most established neighbourhoods, set directly along the tranquil edge of Poortjies Lagoon on the low-lying side of Beacon Way. Its name is said to mean gateway to the river mouth.

What defines Poortjies is its exceptional relationship with the lagoon. Here, the water is glassy and gentle, forming warm, shallow sandbanks where children learn to swim, dogs splash freely, and paddleboards glide. Kayaking, canoeing, fishing, prawn pumping, picnics, and sunset strolls are part of everyday life, with the estuary stretching wide and calm before narrowing into the river system inland.

The suburb itself is flat, leafy, and deeply walkable, with mature trees, established gardens, and peaceful streets that feel lived-in and cared for. Homes range from prized lagoon-front residences and long-held family houses to sectional-title apartments and more modest inland properties, creating a mix that appeals to both permanent residents and investors. Turnover is low — many families stay for decades — which has made availability increasingly scarce and demand consistently strong.
